Location-Based Devices and Services

As more electronic devices have built-in positioning support, global positioning is becoming omnipresent. This sentiment is shared by many in the industry.

"Location-based devices and services are receiving mass market acceptance, offering a range of benefits to both consumer and commercial users," said Steven W. Berglund, president and CEO of Trimble.
"It's something that will become integral to the way digital imaging works," said Aimee Baldridge, a New York-based writer and photographer who tracks trends with digital imaging. "I think it's definitely headed for the main stream."
"We strongly believe that location-based capabilities and services will be an important element of future mobile communications devices," said Kai Oistamo, executive vice president and general manager of Mobile Phones, Nokia.

Location-based devices and services are experiencing significant growth in wide ranges of areas, such as automobile and maritime navigation, and providing relevant location-based information. With more mobile devices, such as mobile phones and cameras, incorporating location-based services, mass adoption of location-based services is just a matter of time.

IpVenture has contributed to this industry by providing a number of innovative solutions and products. Some examples of IpVenture's solutions are described below.

Real-time Position Acquisition in a Power Efficient Manner
This solution offers position acquisition with leading edge power efficiency. Mobile GPS solutions operating on battery power can particularly benefit from this solution. In one implementation, our solution can monitor motion, yet remain in a low-power state and not acquire position information until the motion information indicates a need for position acquisition. U.S. Patent 6,975,941

User-Friendly Location Data Presentation
This solution can add a map to a location presentation. Location information is not presented in numbers (such as GPS coordinates), but in names, such as points of interest. It can show a route of your trip, documenting your movement from place to place chronologically. Where you traveled can be associated with the time when you were there, and can also be linked to other information, such as a website showing the history of a location you visited, or the temperatures of a number of locations when you were there. U.S. Patent 7,218,938

Shipment Tracking with Position and Condition Monitoring
This solution offers not only global positioning for a shipment but also condition monitoring of the shipment. For example, a mobile positioning device can be attached to a package in shipment. The device can track the location and certain conditions of the package, and such information can be periodically transmitted to a central station. Authorized personnel can access such information via the station's web interface. Also, notifications can be provided to alert authorized personnel of irregular delay and/or shipping conditions. This solution can also be useful for insurance companies. U.S. Patent 7,212,829

Low Cost Position Monitoring
This solution offers inexpensive position monitoring. A GPS receiver component, attached to a package or a person, can receive and extract raw position data. Then the data can be transmitted to a portable position-computing device to be further processed into the location of the component. Auxiliary information can also be monitored using one or more auxiliary sensors. The auxiliary information can pertain to a condition of the package or a health condition of the person. U.S. Patent 7,321,774

Web-based Location Monitoring and Notification
Positions of mobile devices (associated with people or packages) can be centrally maintained at a website. Authorized persons can access such position information via a web interface. Notifications regarding certain pre-selected positions can be transmitted to authorized persons, who are interested in the positions of the mobile devices. U.S. Patent 7,366,522
